Social-Emotional Learning Supports
Social-emotional learning assists our students in thriving in school, work, and life. Social-emotional learning is the development and use of social and emotional skills. What are those? They are the skills we use to cope with our feelings, set goals, make decisions, empathize, and how we interact or get along with each other. Those who have built solid social-emotional skills are better able to make decisions, build positive relationships, and manage the challenges that daily life brings. These skills are learned and need to be developed, students aren't just born with them. Brookings-Harbor High School supports teaching students how to cope, manage emotions, solve problems, and get along with each other so that they can be the most productive students they can be. We also encourage all parents/guardians/families to work with their students to learn these skills, reinforce their use, and be a support for their students' social-emotional learning throughout life.
COVID-19 has been challenging and stressful for high school students. Fear and anxiety about graduation requirements and credits, college admission requirements and deadlines, worrisome news stories, the health of friends and loved ones, and other concerns may still feel overwhelming and cause strong emotions for students and their families/guardians.
People will need continued support during this challenging time and many may not feel that it is OK to ask for help. But, if we do not care for ourselves, it is nearly impossible to support others, so asking for help is a worthwhile investment in you, and those you care for.
We realize during these times, mental health support for our students is more important than ever, school counselors are here for students. BHHS school counselors address students' social-emotional needs through care, connection, and continuity of learning for all students.
Check ins and Counseling sessions/meetings- asking how students are doing and what they are feeling. Counseling and resources for depression, stress, anxiety, self harm, and suicidal ideation. Face to Face, Email, Phone, and Google Meets video chat appointments available- sign up in counselor's notebook or email/phone for date and time.

- Correct Breathing/Relaxation- A Google slide presentation on correct breathing techniques to relax and reduce anxiousness- Show Google Slides

- Use of "I" Statements
- Journal- Writing things down in a journal or diary helps take the thoughts out of your head.
- Exercise- Putting physical stress on your body through exercise can relieve mental stress. The best benefits are gained when you exercise regularly so, take a walk, ride your bike, go for a jog, yoga, attend athletic practice, or safely lift some weights.

Students can seek connection and relationship with their peers in the required Cohort class or help put on school related events teaming up with students in our Leadership class. By joining academic and extracurricular clubs as well as athletics students have a variety of opportunities to stay connected to each other and BHHS!

The training/approach behind BSAP provides students with support and early intervention that is needed to develop behavioral skills. incorporates social/emotional issues in building student assets and strengthens student-staff relationships.
