For the 2026-27 school year, Brookings-Harbor High School will encourage a more balanced use of student technology during the school day. Rather than assigning a take-home Chromebook to each student, the high school will return to keeping classroom sets of Chromebooks available on a cart. Students will use these devices for assignments, research, and other projects when directed by teachers, and the Chromebooks will stay at school.
We are making this change to strengthen engagement and focus in the classroom. When students arrive and immediately open up Chromebooks, it can become a struggle to be fully present with their teacher and classmates. This approach fits well with the electronic device expectations already in place at BHHS (such as the cell phone ban) and a classroom environment frequently requested by both students and teachers. We are excited about what this means for the school day, and we want families to know what to expect.
What does this mean for my student day-to-day?
Students will continue to use BHSD Chromebooks for digital coursework. The difference is that the devices will live in the classroom rather than traveling back and forth. Teachers will hand out and collect the Chromebooks as part of their lessons, so students no longer need to carry, charge, or keep track of a school device.
Does my student need to bring a device from home?
No. The classroom Chromebooks provide everything students need for in-class digital work. As a reminder, personal electronic devices such as cell phones and smartwatches should be off and away during the instructional day per the District policy and State rules.
Will homework still require a computer?
Most digital coursework will be designed to happen during class, where students have a Chromebook ready when they need one. Text/paper options will be available for homework assignments. Teachers will keep at-home technology needs in mind as they plan assignments. Limited checkouts will be available when a need is determined.
Will my family still be responsible for device damage or replacement fees?
Because Chromebooks will no longer leave campus, families will no longer carry the cost of damage or replacement for an individually assigned device. The school will manage the care and upkeep of the classroom carts.
What if my student has a documented need for an assigned device?
Students with an accommodation that calls for consistent access to a specific device will continue to be supported.
