Proposed new Carpentry curriculum available for review at the District Office

Brookings-Harbor High School's Career Technical Education department is introducing a proposed carpentry curriculum, scheduled for potential implementation in the second semester of the 2023-2024 academic year. The suggested materials, "Carpentry 7th Edition" (2021) by Leonard Koel and "Workbook Carpentry 7th Edition" (2021) by Thomas E. Proctor, are both published by American Technical Publishers.

The curriculum is designed to enhance the school's current woods and construction courses, including Woodworking I and II, Construction Trades I and II, Creative Metal and Wood Arts, and Mechanical CAD/Drafting. These resources will provide students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in carpentry.

A preview of the curriculum is available for public review at the Brookings-Harbor School District office, located at 629 Easy Street, Brookings, Oregon, 97415. The display is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding December 25th and January 1st. The last day for viewing and submitting feedback is January 17th, by noon. Feedback can be given in writing at the District Office or through an online submission form.

The estimated cost for this curriculum adoption ranges from $3,325 to $7,000, based on the quantity of textbooks (25 to 50) ordered. Each textbook, which includes e-textbook lifetime access, is priced at $115. A 180-day e-access option is available for $77. Workbooks are priced at $36 each. The curriculum also includes digital Learner Resources to aid in material comprehension, featuring quizzes, glossaries, flashcards, math applications, printreading tests, and more.

Additionally, an Online Instructor Resource package is available for $375, offering comprehensive teaching materials, including an e-textbook, instructional guide, PowerPoint presentations, assessment tests, answer keys, and all Learner Resource elements.

This curriculum proposal, the first of its kind in the district for this subject, was presented by Superintendent Helena Chirinian at the BHSD School Board of Directors' meeting in December 2023. The board is expected to make a decision on the adoption in its January 2024 meeting.
