Brookings-Harbor Celebrates Class of 2023

BROOKINGS, Ore. -- Brookings-Harbor High School will celebrate the achievement of 77 new graduates at the annual ceremony from 2 to 4 pm. Saturday, June 10, at Elmer Bankus Field, the BHHS football and track and field stadium located at 522 Fern Ave.

At the ceremony, Principal DeAnne Varitek, Superintendent David Marshall, and School Board Chair Alan Nidiffer will recognize and present honors for academic excellence. This year's Valedictorians are Alison Dodds, Acacia Pringle, and Alyssum Spitael. The Salutatorian is Daisha Nidiffer. Additional students being recognized for high-grade point averages include Tristan Brouillard, Reagan Pieren, Garren Ramirez, Marissa Scott, Lily Strahm, Ashlyn Schofield, and Brian Walker.

Ten students will be recognized with an honors diploma. To qualify, these students must take specific core classes that are more rigorous including Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and Dual Credit classes through partnerships with Southern Oregon University, Oregon Institute of Technology, and Southwestern Oregon Community College, as well as additional years in science and mathematics. Honors diplomas were earned by Dodds, Ha Nah Hager, Olivia Marks, Nidiffer, Pringle, Ramirez, Lauren Roots, Spitael, Strahm, and Walker.

Three students will graduate this year with the Oregon Seal of Biliteracy – a first for BHHS. This is the official state verification of a student’s ability to speak, read and write in their home language, or any additional language other than English. To earn this mark of distinction, a student must pass a highly technical exam. Congratulations to Saron Cruz and Brian Walker (Spanish) and Ha Nah Hager (Korean).

Students will recognize a teacher of the year, Mr. Corey Tamongdong of the BHHS Music Department; and two staff persons of the year: Ms. Tina Peters (secretary) and Mr. Adrian Alonzo (head custodian). Local radio DJ and sportscaster Kevin Bane will present the keynote address. For additional information, visit bhhs.brookings.k12.or.us/apps/pages/graduation2023.
