Principal's Message for Face-to-Face Students and Families (Oct. 23, 2020)

Hello Bruin Families,

Fall is in the air and we are rapidly approaching the end of our first quarter. With that, our attention is focused on how our students are doing with distance learning and how they are managing their lives.

Limited In-Person Opportunities

Some of our courses require the use of physical tools or an opportunity to perform so we have invited some students into the building under the Ready Schools, Safe Learner guidance from the State. We screen every student who enters, require everyone to wear masks, utilize physical distance measures, and sanitize between groups to promote the health and safety of all. So far we have seen construction, welding, and first aid students. We look forward to expanding these opportunities soon!

Parent/Teacher Conferences

Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held virtually on Wednesday, November 4th and Thursday November 5th from 5-8pm. Use the sign-up link below to view available, fifteen minute time-slots with your student’s cohort teacher: https://www.ptcfast.com/schools/Brookings_Harbor_High_School. Cohort teachers will be able to discuss your students’ progress in all classes.

How are We Doing?

We would love to connect with you to see how our families are managing distance learning with all of its challenges. If you’d like to participate in a “parent check-in” dialogue, please join us on Zoom on Monday, October 26th at 6pm. Click HERE for the link to the meeting.

The Counseling Department is Here for You!

Most students will need some form of support during this challenging time, but may not know where to go for help or even that it is okay to ask for help. Feelings and symptoms of stress are natural, however persistent stress can turn to distress that can negatively affect our lives. Be sure to monitor yours and your child's physical and mental health, find positive ways to relieve stress, and know when it is time to ask for help. If we do not care for ourselves, it is nearly impossible to help support others. Reach out to us by phone or email. Valuable information is shared on our Counseling website at https://bhhs.brookings.k12.or.us/ and students have access to the Student Services Digital Classroom where emergency and resource numbers are also available.

No School on Friday, October 30th

Students will not attend classes on October 30th due to an end-of-quarter teacher grading day. I would, however, encourage students to continue to use that time to keep up with any outstanding school work or to read ahead. Our office staff will still be available on that day to answer your questions and the lobby will still be open for service.

End of Quarter Progress Reports

PowerSchool will be closed on Friday, October 30th, so that teachers can enter updated grades. On Monday, November 2nd, PowerSchool will be reopened to reflect end-of-quarter grades. We will also mail home a copy of your student’s progress report to the address that we have on record.

Continue to check our website for district updates and our Facebook page for building announcements. We consider it a privilege to work with our families and are always interested in how we can support you more so please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.

Respectfully,

DeAnne Varitek, Principal
