Congratulations to the following Brookings-Harbor High School students whose art received awards at the Coos Art Museum’s annual VISION Student Art Show — an art competition for high school students from throughout southern Oregon sponsored in part by Southwestern Oregon Community College Foundation.
BHHS Freshman Zach Cabrera won Second Place overall, winning a two-year tuition waiver to Southwestern Oregon Community College with a value of $10,000-$12,000 dollars. His piece was a tempera painting.
"I have taught here at BHHS for 15 years, and this is the first time a BHHS freshman has won a tuition waiver (top 3) in that time frame," said BHHS art teacher Sheryl Tuttle. "Last year, sophomore Natalie Garcia won 'Best in Show' as a sophomore. Both winners will have to wait until they graduate to utilize the tuition waivers."
Cabrera completed the work as an extra credit activity in the Beginning Art class during the Fall Semester.
BHHS students represented well across all categories:
- Savannah Lewis earned Third Place in the Senior category for her watercolor entitled “Shades of Melancholy."
- Mia Weaver earned First Place in the Junior category with her spray paint landscape image entitled “Crisp Evening.”
- Mishka Snow Gutierrez earned First Place in the Sophomore category for her mulitmedia piece entitled “Little Miss.”
- Laney DeCausmaker earned Third Place in the Freshman category for her untitled scratchboard image
