The BHHS freshmen class sent gratitude letters to the military in November with the help of Terry Klawson, a long-time Brookings resident who has been sending letters for over 50 years since her own sons served in Vietnam. We are hoping to have at least 500 letters to send off and expect various branches to receive them by the winter holidays. Brookings Harbor High School freshmen class salutes our military!
The high school leadership class decorated a "ChariTree" for the community-wide ChariTree event hosted by a non-profit committee of the Brookings Area Council for the Arts. The event brings awareness of local nonprofits and helps them to fundraise for their activities all while the community enjoys a holiday festival of trees. The leadership class tree was auctioned to benefit Katelyn’s Cause. The tree went for $215 and BHHS got the Santa award for it for youth participation, earning another $35. The leadership class got also received some donations for the tree from the BHHS Booster Club and others to boost the tree's value. Students from leadership class also handmade ornaments for the tree with help from BHHS art teacher Sheryl Tuttle and the laser printer. Local nonprofit Oasis House also asked BHHS students to decorate their tree. The Oasis tree raised $100 at the auction plus $35 for a wreath they sold.
The leadership class also participated in making cards for veterans and served at the Veterans Day breakfast at the Elks Lodge on Veterans Day from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Finally, the leadership class adopted six Kalmiopsis Elementary families in need to get gifts for this holiday season. Those gifts will be delivered on December 21. These are just a few examples of the way our local students are spreading holiday cheer this year.
